Proof That Age Is Just A State Of Mind
75We can't really put aside the common aches and pains associated with aging. But we can ignore them. We can't go back to being that hard-bodied, bullet-proof, head-turner we once were, but we can like ourselves anyway. We can sit around reminiscing, regretting, and refusing to ignite that spark that's still there or we can decide to light it. Aging is something we have no control over. There is no use in trying to hang on to our youth because it is fleeting. Just because we're getting older doesn't mean we don't have much to give. There are scores of seniors out there who don't see their age as a handicap or detriment but rather as just another wonderful mountain to scale. They are proud of their years and it shows.
MEET ROSE GILBERT - At the age of 88, Rose Gilbert teaches Advanced Placement English Literature at Pacific Palisades High School in California. This energetic feisty teacher is affectionately referred to as "Mama G." Her students will testify that her enthusiasm for literature and poetry is infectious and she has no problem clowning it up to make the class more interesting. She once wore a slip over her clothes to teach about "Freudian slips". What is truly amazing is that Mama G doesn't need the money. Her husband left her millions when he died. She has no plans to retire.

MEET BILL TAPIA - At the age of 101, Bill Tapia is still a beloved entertainer. Known as the Duke of the Uke, he has played with Bing Crosby, Fats Domino and Louis Armstrong. He has 90 years of experience as a professional entertainer and is still going strong. He is an icon of old Hawaiian music, playing his ukulele with adept talent. At the age of 10, Tapia played for American troops on the way to the killing fields of World War I. He is very proud of that to this day. Cheerful and young at heart, Bill Tapia doesn't let his age get in the way of what he loves to do.

MEET GEORGE H.W. BUSH - At the age of 85, the former president of the United States marked his birthday by leaping from a plane and zooming downward at over a 100 miles per hour. He landed safely. He chose to skydive on his 75th and 80th birthdays too. Always active, he says he has slowed down a bit from his former athletic days but does not intend to stop moving. He told reporters " Just because you're an old guy, you don't have to sit around drooling in the corner." Mr. Bush's spirit is an inspiration to other seniors to stay active. His age has not stopped him from doing what he thinks is fun. We can look forward to his 90th birthday jump.

MEET NOLA OCHS - At the age of 95, Nola Ochs received her college degree from Fort Hays State University in Kansas. She had been taking classes for years and decided after her husband's death to move into the dorms and finish her degree work. She joked with reporters that she was a "senior" not just in life but in college. Ochs is very proud of her earned Bachelor's degree in general studies with a history concentration. But now that this part of her life is history, she has not ruled out pursuing a Master's degree. She said she'd like to accumulate as many degrees as possible. "And I'm going to use them too, when I get old," she quipped. There is no doubt, she just may do that.

MEET BUSTER MARTIN - At the age of 94, Buster Martin made it to the finish line of London's marathon race. It is a 26 mile route, a challenge to even younger runners. Buster caused much controversy when he claimed he was actually 101 years old. His goal to be listed in the Guiness Book of World Records backfired when it was discovered he was only a sprightly 94 years of age. Still, Buster's spunk and endurance is to be nothing but admired. He still works for Pimlico Plumbers and was recognized in 2006 as the UK's oldest employee.
MEET CLINT EASTWOOD - At the age of 79, Clint Eastwood hasn't slowed down. The macho cowboy we all love is still making movies - his latest, Gran Torino, is a big hit. He is the oldest leading man to attain a #1 box office hit. Eastwood has starred in hit movies for over 50 years and he has no plans to stop. He is currently working on two new movies set for production in 2010. His walk has lost a bit of its former swagger but viewing him in action can only "make my day".

Inspiring stories,suziecat7. Anybody who worked with Bing Crosby has to be good -- and Bill Tapia is still playing his ukelele with a band at age 101 is incredible. Good work.
Great Hub.Put it this way..Aging is certainly better than the alternative!
Cool Hub SuzieCat7, I hope I am spry tomorrow! :) Just did 1 1/2 hours of physical therapy today and lived through it, gonna hurt tomorrow! Cudo's to all of your profiles!
Hope for me yet then. The guy who has played with such long gone greats is awesome.
I studied psychology once upon a time and it was proven that your IQ level does not drop with age, it pretty much stays at the same level your whole life, illness aside.
What the study also said was that kids being born today grow up smarter due to all the stimulation modern living provides from an early age. So sort of suggests that your IQ level is established in early childhood.
Amazing people with a lot of wisdom to offer the younger generation. It is true; age is just a state of mind. Great article and Eastwood is remarkable.
Great role models for all to follow! Great hub!!
great hub, interesting topic.
Nice hub Suziecat7, and that picture of you just makes me smile.(hope that's you)
Wow! Nice hub Suzie. I love hearing about all these seniors who embrace life with such gusto. Rose Gilbert sounds like she's teaching those kids a lot more than English. What an example! I love the anecdote about how she wore the slip to class to teach about Freudian slips lol!
Loved this hub, my mum has just retired at 80, she ran her own shop for the last twenty years. Great writing
I love this! The more and more I study this, the more I believe that aging just means growing closer to your true self. Great hub!
Thanks for highlighting these wonderful people and for bringing attention to the importance of attitude in aging. It's important to see that aging is an opportunity not simply a death sentence.
You are only as old as you feel. Unfortunately some people give up way too young and let a minor ache and pain manifest into some crisis.
Inspirational hub! It is all in the attitude, right? You CAN overcome many of the negative aspects of aging if you want to. Reading stories about people who have done just that makes it easier for others to do the same. Thanks for writing this one.
This is a nice read! I want to age healthy like them!
I am commenting, because I saw the picture of a Brain ... advertising something on your page... The Brain, anyway, is not the Human Mind ... its just an Organ which processes Abstract Thoughts into Sensory Perceptions ... Human Experiential.
My friend, not only Age, and Happiness ... Human Mind is the Repertoire ... of Truth and the Existenial's Reality ... Everything, including, Sex and Freedoms etc. Exist... Because of our Mind.
Guess at age 66 I'm just a kid compared to the people listed, and thank you for including our pres Bush. So many times our presidents are forgotten too. Very true, age is a state of mind. I never have thought much about it, but have watched many friends much younger than me get "old." Just the other day a good friend in his mid-50s said to me, "You're the only one who doesn't get old, Jim." Wow, I couldn't think of a thing to say back.
Fantastic, inspirational well arranged Hub!
One of my son's is fond of saying, "Age is a matter of mind, and if you don't mind, it don't matter". How true.
I feel confident that we are supposed to live to at least 120. You have given us examples of pathfinders to show the way. One more for your list is a remarkable man, a future president of America, Herman Cain, I just love his energy.
Loved this Hub. bravo!
Susiecat, what a morale boosting hub for all the seniors out there. Surely, aging is more of a state of mind than true physical incapacitation. We can be productive at any age as your examples show and there are many many more.
It's all in the mind as the saying goes.
Voted up, useful and interesting.
Its the state of mind. You either got or not. My farther-in-law is 85 but he looks and act about 60. He is positive and loves walking, keeps interested. and well thats all you need to keep going. Great post by the way.
Susiecat -- sorry I'm so long getting around to reading this -- it's great (take it from another oldster) to see folks still out there and in the thick of things. Good read and voted Up (even if I'm late). Best, Sis
