The Student
55
The forest and the streams
Have their knowledge
The wisdom of the ages
Resides serenely
In the eyes of the fawn.
And I, a traveller
Of the lesson road,
Stagger reluctantly forward
Gathering morsels of information
Where I can.
But never enough.
What small solace
When limit deems condition?
The nemesis, one's state of mind?
Never to absorb
But only surface,
Reward to enlighten and fulfill.
The need to know
What sages never said
What written word
Could never comprehend.
Grasping with the soul
For seductive lore
I stumble
Ever the glutton
The selfish purveyor of argument.
The ogre of experience
Is welcome
Lest ignorance cause defeat
Or satisfaction
Become substantial character.
How I hunger and I thirst
For what only the gods could know
And I could only hope to understand.
